My politics are substantially further to the left than Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to the point I actually consider Biden to be right on the cusp of center-right.

Their constant attacks on objective reality (climate, vaccines, basic science, etc) and entire groups of human beings (people of color, women, LGBTQ, non-"christian", teachers, journalists, M&Ms, etc) is what's driving the vast majority of the social and political problems facing America. The rightwingers are by far the more "us vs everyone" side. Who the hell should I back? I could NEVER vote for Trump, but - and this is a hard pill to swallow, I worry it's shaking out this way across the country - right-of-center folks are starting to make more sense. I'm a double-vaxxed + boosted tech professional that thinks we should move to a single-payer healthcare system and supports the second amendment. I would like to think that most people fall SOMEWHERE in the middle. Not all non-progressives are slack-jawed Neanderthals that think Obama is coming for their baby, but if the left continues to separate everyone into those two camps, they're going to lose the middle. This is the kind of thing that makes me worried that Trump is going to win. Good thing there are people like you who are willing to take the bold stance that the truth is somewhere in between. You mean the camp that says science is legitimate and the camp that says it isn't? Never thought I'd fondly remember the days of "A thousand points of light"Īnd Neil Young had some thoughts about that too. I seethe with rage at those people who keep telling me there are actually "five lights".Īgreed. I cry for those who have already lost their lives to this foolishness, and the untold number of dead waiting in our near-term future. My point: this is bad, getting worse, we can't/won't stop it, and it's not going end well. We live in a "post-truth" world, where "reality" is whatever you declare it to be, and that genie is never going back into the bottle. I have no answers to fix it, and blame does not rest entirely in any socio-political camp (tho I have my own personal opinions on that). Our entertainment networks are now doing the same, soon to be followed by our public education system. Our news sources have already self-sorted into camps of opposition. Some of us literally can't even talk to our family members. Not policies, but whether or not the sky is actually blue or whether water is wet.

You know: we have a problem, but we disagree what to do about it.

As an "older" American, I miss the days when people actually debated POLICY.
